Sedation Dentistry
Sedation Dentistry, also called Relaxation Dentistry, is a way for dentists to manage the pain and anxiety associated with dental appointments. Anxiety is a common emotion surrounding dental work. Patients of all ages and backgrounds can experience anxiety.
You'll be amazed at how much Dr. Meyer can do, when you are totally relaxed…and completely comfortable. Dr. Meyer offers two types of sedation for you to choose.
Inhalation Sedation
Inhalation Sedation uses Nitrous Oxide which is also known as "laughing gas". This is the most frequently used sedation method in dentistry. Patients may even fall asleep and experience some degree of amnesia about what happened during their dental appointment.
Within minutes, the Nitrous Oxide is flushed from the body so that patients can drive themselves to and from their dental appointments. They may return to normal activities immediately.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral Conscious Sedation is administered in the form of a pill. The medication is from a group of drugs known as Benzodiazapines. Not only do these medications have a sedative effect, they also have some degree of amnesic effect for most people. Patients remember little or nothing about their dental appointment. All body functions remain normal and patients are able to breathe on their own.
You will get a prescription for a sedative like Valium to take the night before treatment to assist in getting a good night's sleep, in addition to one to two tiny pills before your appointment. You will need to have a companion accompany you to your appointment. When you arrive, you will be relaxed.
Our experienced, caring team will monitor and care for you throughout your entire visit. Your entire appointment will seem like only a few minutes. Afterward, you may be a bit wobbly, so your companion will need to take you home and stay with you until you've completely recovered.
