Sedation Dentistry
Sedation Dentistry, also called Relaxation Dentistry, is a way for dentist to manage pain and anxiety during dental appointments. Anxiety is a common emotion associated with dental work. Patients of all ages and backgrounds sometimes experience anxiety. You'll be amazed at how much can be accomplished in such a seemingly short period of time, while you were totally relaxed… and completely comfortable. Dr. Meyer offers two types of sedation.
Inhalation Sedation
Inhalation Sedation uses Nitrous Oxide which is also known as "laughing gas". This is the most frequently used sedation method used in dentistry. The patient will often fall asleep and experience some degree of amnesia about what happened during their dental appointment. Nitrous Oxide is flushed from the system in matter of minutes and the patient can drive themselves to and from their dental appointment. They return to normal activities immediately.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral Conscious Sedation is administered by taking a pill. The oral medication is from a group of drugs known as Benzodiazapines. Not only do these medications have a sedative effect they also have some degree of amnesic effect for most people. Patients remember little or nothing about their dental appointment. All body functions remain normal and the person is able to breathe on their own. We'll give you a prescription for a sedative like Valium to take the night before the treatment to assist in getting a good night's sleep. You will take one to two tiny pills before your appointment. You will need to have a companion accompany you to our office. Upon arrival, you will be relaxed. Our experienced, caring team will monitor and care for you throughout your entire visit. The entire appointment will seem like only a few minutes. You may be a bit wobbly, so your companion will need to take you home and stay with you until you've completely recovered.
